Benefits

An FCE offers numerous benefits for physicians, employers, physical therapists, attorneys, and insurers.

• Produces objective functional data that takes the guesswork out of Return to Work (RTW) determination. With a comprehensive understanding of the patient’s functional abilities, physicians can accurately complete workers compensation forms and written RTW statements.
• Reduces the risk of re-injury. Using objective FCE data, physicians can determine safe physical levels for the patient upon RTW.
• Reduces liability. Physicians can support RTW determination with accurate FCE data.

Referrals

Physicians, case workers, vocational specialists, physical therapists, attorneys, insurers, and employers can all refer the client to an FCE. In Hawaii, physical therapists are permitted to evaluate clients without a physician referral.
