Employer Benefits & Referrals

Benefits

An FCE offers numerous benefits for physicians, employers, physical therapists, attorneys, and insurers.

  • Confirms the worker is ready to return to work, with minimal risk of re-injury.
  • Provides specific information on the worker’s physical abilities and limitations.
  • Provides safe physical levels for lifting or carrying.
  • Offers recommendations for modifying work hours, duties, or the worksite based on the worker’s physical abilities and limitations, to facilitate RTW.
  • Provides feedback on the worker returning to full-time status.
  • Provides a summary on the worker’s cooperation, consistency, motivation, and effort levels during the FCE.
  • Offers recommendations on further rehabilitation.

Referrals

Physicians, case workers, vocational specialists, physical therapists, attorneys, insurers, and employers can all refer the client to an FCE. In Hawaii, physical therapists are permitted to evaluate clients without a physician referral.
